MOVIE REVIEW - HOBBS & SHAW: TO WATCH, OR NOT TO WATCH?

Truth is…we don’t think we could have asked for a better spin-off. When you think about the franchise as a whole, there aren’t any other characters outside of Hobbs, Shaw or Toretto that could really hold their own in either a solo, or a team-up outing (Our opinion), and we think some die-hard fans would agree as well…so what more could we ask for?

For The Rock and Jason Statham both, we kind of already know what to expect from their interactions with one another. We’ve seen it in previous films already, so that part of the film doesn’t come as a surprise at all. Fun filled shootouts with comedy roast sessions that ultimately make for a really great action packed flick.

But when you add Idris Elba into the mix, you get a version of the actor that you crave more for throughout the film. He’s clearly hurt, and that’s what the F&F films have done such a great job with. Showing the softer sides to these “macho” typed men. Only problem is, is that we never get to dive deeper into these characters, and this happens even with some of the permanent acts within the main series. It’s as if the emotional tones get forgotten about, and overshadowed by all of the action (Rightfully so), but we feel like it’s time for these movies to finally start giving us a bit more when it comes to character building. We don’t just want to care about these characters for a moment throughout a film, we want our care to last up until the next one comes out, and we want follow-ups. We want to be able to relate to them more!

Yeh, Yeh, We know what you’re thinking…if we want some of that, we’re in the wrong place. But we feel that this franchise has such a loyal fan base, that if it gave us a bit more substance, it wouldn’t miss a beat. On another note, for some strange reason, we were waiting for Cipher (Charlize Theron) to pop-up and be the mastermind behind all of the madness, we could have sworn that we read somewhere that she’d be making an appearance in the film as well, but maybe we read wrong.

PROS:

  • SURPRISING CAMEOS

  • NON-STOP ACTION

  • IDRIS ELBA AS THE BAD GUY

  • ACTUALLY FUNNY

CONS:

  • GRATUITOUS ACTION

  • NO JAW DROPPING POST CREDIT SCENE(S)

  • WHERE ARE THE OTHER GUYS? (OWEN SHAW, OTHER F&F CREW MEMBERS)

  • BEGINS TO DRAG OUT AT A CERTAIN POINT OF THE FILM

In conclusion…
